Antigone’s Last Birthday

Antigone's Last Birthday is an adaptation of the eponymous play by Sophocles. Inner City Arts' high school performing arts interns worked with the wonderful playwright Megan Tabaque @megtabaque to retell the tragedy through the lens of a contemporary issue. Setting the story on the US - Mexico border, the all female cast (including playwright and director Holli Hornlien @hhornlien) investigate the social and cultural complexities, as well as the conflicts, which arise within sites of migration.

The projection design used mapped animations (at a 1:1 scale) to move the stage set forward and backward through time. Our aesthetic posture flickered between photo-realism and magical realism, enabling the stage design to move in and out of 'reality,' transporting the audience to the other side' of both the border wall and life itself.
